Illicit Magic Blog Tour!

Welcome to the next stop on the
Illicit Magic blog tour!

More than three hundred years after the most terrifying witch hunts the world has ever known, it's happening again.

Young witch, Stella, has to put her faith in strangers just to stay alive but she might not be any safer in their midst than from the danger she is running from.

There is more than one dark secret in her new family: Étoile’s sister is spoken of in fear and sadness; Marc is supposed to be a powerful witch but is missing his magic; where does the owner of their safe house vanish to every day and why does Evan have the eyes of someone not quite human? There is only one secret that someone will do anything to keep quiet, but whose secret is it and will Stella have to pay the price for silence?

Today, author, Camilla Chafer is here to answer some of my nosy questions. :)

Thanks so much, Camilla, for joining me here on Reality Bites!
Hi Mandy, thanks for having me!

This is the first book in the Stella Mayweather series. Can you tell us a little bit about what we can expect in Illicit Magic and beyond?
Illicit Magic is about Stella, a young woman who’s on the verge of realising incredible powers. When we first meet her she’s being chased by a gang of creeps but rescue sees her whisked away and that’s where her life really changes. Who are the Brotherhood, what happened to her parents, is she safe amongst her new friends, will she find love... and can she find it all out before it’s too late? Magic, mystery and a super-hot man who’s not quite human all roll together for a fun read.
As for beyond – we’re going to see more supernatural creatures, Stella’s powers are going to continue to develop, there are villains to battle and a lot of adventure and romance.

How many more books in this series do you currently have planned?
I’ve roughly mapped the series out for a six-story arc. The second book is out Thursday and I’ve just started writing the third which will be out in December as I don’t want to keep readers waiting!

I for one love reading about witches, and am so excited about this world you have created. What inspired you to write about witches?
I just love supernatural stuff, always have done, and witches have long held a fascination for me. I think it’s because they’re so closely aligned with female empowerment, more so than any other supernatural creature. In the paranormal genre a lot of heroines go one of two ways – they need a lot of protection from and by supe’ men, or they are so kick-ass it hurts. I wanted to get somewhere in the middle with a witch who would gradually realise incredible powers.

Have you always had an interest in the paranormal? :)
Yep. Two of my favourite childhood books were A Witch in the Family by Zilpha Snyder and Clementina by Eileen Dunlop. As for TV... Buffy, The Craft, Sookie... yeah, I love it all.

Do you have a favorite place where you go to write?
My sofa. I didn’t actually get a desk until earlier this year, so Illicit Magic was mostly written sat on the sofa. Not ideal, but it worked.

Can you give us 3 random facts about you?
My first book out was non-fiction and for parents who wanted to go back to school or college; I’ve seen Luke Perry naked (ok, to be fair, he was on stage in When Harry Met Sally at the time and there were a lot of other people there); I’ve got two degrees in Politics.

What do you enjoy doing when youʼre not writing?
Um, crochet. I swear it’s cool again. It is. No, it is. Really. I’m making a big granny blanket right now. I love hosting Friday Night Movie Night with my family, reading Apartment Therapy and house blogs makes for some happy down time and reading. I read lots.

What can we look forward to from you in the near future?
Well, tomorrow you get the sequel, Unruly Magic, so that’s not too far ahead! I’ve been plotting a new series as well – something lighter and funnier and I’m itching to get started on that.

Quickies- Favorites:
Cookie- Yes. All of them. Yum.
Comfort food- Pizza. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Not on the same plate.
Drink - Ginger beer
Music – Currently listening to Adele (‘Fire in the Rain’ gives me shivers) but generally alternative/rock.
Movie – oh... I can’t pick one. The last one I saw at the movies was Harry Potter 7 2/2 though – lump in the throat stuff.
Book-  The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley (but my list goes on and on!)
Author – Sarah Addison Allen (I adore the way she writes about North Carolina in such a magical way).

Finally, any advice for aspiring writers out there?
Perseverance. Grammar, spelling and technique you can learn. Perseverance is the toughest thing, and if I can get there, so can you.

Again, Thanks so much! I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions! :)
Anytime :) Really happy to be here!

I'm kind of geeky-excited for the next couple books in this series! Can't wait to get my hands on those. :)

Hi, I'm Camilla and I'm the author of Illicit Magic and Unruly Magic, the first two books in the Stella Mayweather Paranormal Series. The series starts with a lonely young woman, Stella, who has been caught up in a terrifying witch hunt and is whisked thousands of miles away to what she thinks is safety to learn her craft. The series is a blend of magic, mystery and romance with a splash of humour - and while the girls really do go all out to save themselves, there's always a hunky guy or two on hand to help them out.
I live in London, UK but I try to travel as often as I can - lately I've been to Paris, all over Denmark, Luxembourg, and several US states. In my day job I'm a journalist and editor so I write for magazines, newspapers and websites throughout the world (my favourite assignment was spending a week riding rollercoasters - if you listen carefully you can probably still hear me screaming).

And the question of the week:

Q. Name 3 authors that you would love to sit down and spend an hour or a meal with just talking about either their books or get advice on writing from?

I would love to sit and chat with JR Ward. She just seems so awesome and intelligent. I would love to hear how she creates each new book - her whole writing process.

Second, every year Lara Adrian has LambCon in Boston - and I would love to go some year and hang out with her.

Third, Kim Harrison. I just want to hang out with her and chat about the Hollows and how she writes.

I have so many authors, I would love to get to know any of them. I really like Twitter and following their blogs, because it makes them so much more accessible to readers like me and I feel like I get little peeks into their lives.

Review - Some Girls Bite by Chloe Neill

Some Girls Bite (Chicagoland Vampires, #1)Some Girls Bite by Chloe Neill

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Why did I wait so long to read this? It's been on my TBR forever!! I loved this book! And now I need to get the rest of the series, like now...

I love Merit! She is strong yet vulnerable. And I absolutely love her wit and sarcasm. I also love Mallory, and I can't wait to read more from her. The writing was awesome, light, descriptive, easy-to-read, fast, and funny. There were parts of the book where I was literally laughing out loud and had to read parts to my husband to show him why I was laughing.

I was drawn into the world of the Chicagoland Vampires immediately and fell in love with it. The characters are well-developed and you really get involved with their lives. Not only did I laugh, but I also felt Merit's heartache and sense of betrayal right along with her. As well as her determination and pride.

I'm in love with this series now and need to read on. Great... like I needed to add another series to my ever-growing list of books to buy. LOL

Vampire Bites Blog Tour - Interview & Giveaway!

Welcome to the next stop on the
Vampire Bites Blog Tour!

I am so excited today to have author, Katie Salidas here to answer some of my nosy questions. :)

Thanks so much, Katie, for joining me here on Reality Bites!

Can you tell us a little bit about what we can expect in Vampire Bites?
To put it simply, Vampire Bites is just that, an anthology of bite sized vampire stories.
A lot of times ideas for stories come from asking questions.
In House of Immortal Pleasures, I ask: Can a night of good sex really heal a broken heart?
In Halloween Fantasies, I ask: Knowing it might very well be deadly, would you pursue your ultimate fantasy?
In Karma & Melodies, I ask:  What would you go through for a second chance at love?
Each story answers its specific question.

Do all three stories take place in the same world you created, or are they completely separate from each other?
Each story is separate, and had previously been released as short e-reads but they all have a similar “feel.” That’s why I opted to have them in this anthology edition.

Is there any cross-over between these tales and any of your other stories?
The only two that cross are Halloween Fantasies and House of Immortal Pleasures. They are set in the same time frame and feature vampires that are “out of the coffin” to borrow a phrase used before in paranormal fiction. Beyond that, though, each story is completely its own work with unique characters and situation.

What inspired your lusty vampires?
I’m a sucker for romantic and erotic stories and an even bigger sucker for vampires. It just seemed right to put those two loves together. Some stories are “hotter” than others, but they always feature those sexy creatures of the night.

What is the best part of writing erotic stories?
Let’s face it, sex is fun, right? So why should writing about it be any less fun? With erotica you can kind of let your hair down and just have a good time writing the scene. You can really get into it too!

Is there a hard part?
Ah, yeah, but not writing it… Letting people read it! The first time I let someone read an erotic scene I wrote, I was beet red! It felt almost like someone walking in on me and my  husband having sex. But, after getting that scene critiqued (thank god for great crit partners) and taking the initial embarrassment away, I was ready to write more.

Do you have a favorite place where you go to write?
It’s silly, but since I do the majority of my writing on my laptop, my husband and I joke about the “Creative Couch.” It’s actually a loveseat in the front window of our livingroom. I tend to go there when I need to get work done. I’ve written many a story while laying on that couch!

Can you give us 3 random facts about you?
I’ll start with the most exciting thing first. After being told we would never have any more children, I am now pregnant with #2. Due in December!!
I am an Aquarius and truly think that there is some connection between you and your astrological sign.
And finally, I am about as introverted as you can get. I may sound really outgoing and social online but in person, I can make a wallflower stick out. Ha!

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not writing?
Non writing time is family time. I love my Husband and my daughter, (and now soon to be baby #2). I try my best to make sure that I spend lots of quality time doing things with them. Family dinnertime is very important to me. Family game night. Family movie night. I try to make sure we always have fun things to do together. Now, if I could just get hubby into “family hiking” I’d be set. =p

What can we look forward to from you in the near future?
At the moment, I am working on a non-fiction project. I know, where are the vampires, right? But after that is done I want to explore the sequel possibilities of House of Immortal Pleasures. Daphne and Connor’s story is not finished yet.

Quickies- Favorites:
Cookie- Chocolate Chip
Comfort food- Anything with chocolate
Drink- Redbull (can’t have that till after baby is born.)Music – anything alternative.
Movie – The Princess Bride
Book- Queen of the Damned
Author – Too many to list.

Finally, any advice for aspiring writers out there?
Write, write, and write some more! Always have a project to work on and continually strive to improve your craft!

Again, Thanks so much! I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions! :)
Thank you so much for having me here today!! It’s been a pleasure.

Delicate Freakin' Flower Giveaway Blitz!!

You have a chance to win!! Leave a comment with your email and one lucky winner will win a copy of Delicate Freakin' Flower by Eve Langlais!

Dammit , just how many toes was she going to have to stomp on before people realized she was a delicate freakin’ flower?

Naomi doesn’t want to follow tradition and settle down with a violence-loving, chest thumping shapeshifter. She grew up in a household with five, testosterone laden brothers where none of the dishes ever matched, the ugly-as-sin furniture could withstand any catastrophe, and where crazy glue was bought by the case.

When fate—with a snicker—makes her meet not one, but two mates, Naomi digs her heels in and refuses to do what her wolf—and her body—demands. No way is she voluntarily allowing herself to get hitched to a pair of dumbass—totally hot and muscled—lacrosse players.

Can Ethan, the towering Kodiak bear, and Javier, the sexy, tanned jaguar convince this she-wolf that life with them won’t be all chaos? And can this delicate freakn’ flower unbend her prejudices enough to recognize she needs a pair of men who can handle her thorns—and her passion?

Doesn't that sound great? This is a hot, erotic,  m/f/m paranormal romance. You have so many chances to win a free copy - check out this post for all the participating blogs:  BookishSnob

Find out more about Eve Langlais at her website.

Or you can buy the book yourself!

Giveaway will be open until July 24th. I'll post the winner and Eve will send you a copy of your very own!!

Review - Vampire Bites - Katie Salidas

Vampire BitesVampire Bites by Katie Salidas

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Vampire Bites is a collection of 3 short stories. The first - “House of Immortal Pleasures” is about Daphne, whose friends drag her to a vampire brothel for a night of debauchery. Daphne has been burned by love before and is hesitant to let any man touch her. However, she meets Connor, who is serving a sentence at the house and is forced to stay there and service customers. Connor is good at what he does, and the proprietor sets up Daphne with Connor, knowing he can take her friends for all their money.

Daphne does not immediately jump into bed with Connor, and I enjoyed watching him seduce her. He sees something special in Daphne and makes her feel like a beautiful, cherished woman. And isn’t that every woman’s fantasy?

For a short story, we get to know Daphne fairly well. I could relate to her, and I was on her side. We don’t get to know the other characters much, but the only really important one is Connor. We do get to learn a little of his past, but again, it’s a short story.

The sex was delicious. There was plenty of it and the descriptions were vivid. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

“Karma & Melodies”

This is a short and sweet love story. Kendra is on the run from her vampire master, who turned her ten years ago. All that time, she has been in love with the lead singer of a band, Marcus, who she used to watch at a cafe when she was human. They never exchanged words, but he has always been in her heart. Fate has a sense of humor, of course, and they are thrown together. Things go haywire and then Kendra’s master shows up and all hell breaks loose.

I enjoyed this story a lot. I really like stories involving rock bands, and this one didn’t disappoint. I admired Kendra’s strength and loved her for it. There was no sex, but this story was packed with emotion, and I think that served me just as well.

“Halloween Fantasies”

Who wouldn’t love one night to indulge in their darkest fantasies? That’s what Sasha gets to do in this story. It was delicious and fantasy-filled. Hot vampires, sexy bedroom scenes, this one had it all. You don’t get to delve much into the characters, but you don’t need to. It’s a night of fulfilling fantasies. This story hit the spot.

Overall, a fun, quick read that I enjoyed. Hot vampires, spicy sex, delicious romance. Nice way to start out my vacation. :) 3 out of 5. Heat factor was at times 4 out of 5, yet there was hardly any in the second story. Just hints and innuendos.

Review - Warrior Reborn - K.H. LeMoyne

Warrior Reborn (The Guardians of Eden, #2)Warrior Reborn by K.H. LeMoyne

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

We meet Briet and her brother, Ansgar and learn they are guardians. Then Briet goes to her job as a doctor in testing new drugs on children with cancer, and we are inundated with medical terminology. I forgot I was reading a paranormal romance, and felt like I was trying to understand a medical drama on TV. This was really distracting for me throughout the book. Maybe because it just didn’t interest me? I just felt like we could learn about the trials and her work without all the super-technical speak.

In the first few chapters, we meet so many people - doctors, nurses, the people from the drug company, the kids being tested - it’s hard to keep everyone straight. So I just focused on the main players. This drug testing is where Briet meets Jason, and their interactions are deliciously tense, because she senses he is her mate, but she doesn’t want him to be. Yet, there is an attraction there she tries to fight. Jason also feels drawn to her and has no idea why. I like the tense scenes between them, which are all building up to something explosive, I can just tell.

I enjoyed how Briet slowly gets under Jason’s skin, yet he clings to his bachelor rules. He is not the white picket fence and 2.5 kids kind of guy, and he lets her know up front. She had this preconceived fantasy of what it would be like to find her mate, and now that she has found hers, she is disappointed. Call me crazy, but I like it when the relationship isn’t easy and instant happy-ever-after. The build-up for their relationship was awesome. And when they finally came together - Yum!!

I really liked the world that was built, and I think I will go back and read the first book, so I can get to know a little more about this world. The idea is so fresh and unique, I want to explore it more.

One nit-picky thing that I notice with almost every book I read is all the typos - there were several typos, grammar mistakes, spelling errors, name changes, misplaced commas… There were even sentences where words were missing. All it needs is a good once-over with a fine-tooth proofreading comb, and it would be great!

I enjoyed the action, the romance, and the writing was great, there were vivid descriptions, good dialogue, and we really get to know the characters. I sympathized with Briet and Jason, and I wanted them to work it out. The medical conversations and details get to be too much, and I found myself halfway skimming over the explanations, but the love story and the intrigue combined to make a fabulous story. I would rate the book a 3.5 out of 5, because I’m just not into all the scientific detail, but it was an enjoyable read. Heat factor - 3.5 out of 5, also. Sex scenes were hot. :)

Another mini-challenge!

Once Upon a Read-a-Thon

This mini-challenge is from IB Book Blogging

Mini Challenge Question 1:
What is your favorite type of myth (Greek, Roman, Egyptian etc)?
I actually enjoy any kind of mythology. I love learning about what ancient peoples believed in. I'm trying to learn more Celtic mythology because it's so interesting... But my favorite would have to be Greek.

Mini Challenge Question 2:
What is your favorite book with some type of mythology in it?
Hmmm... I had to think about this one for awhile. I really love Gena Showalter's Lords of the Underworld series. It all stems from the story of Pandora's Box, and there is so much more intertwined in there throughout the books... Love them!!
The Darkest Whisper (Lords of the Underworld)  The Darkest Night (Lords of the Underworld, Book 1)The Darkest Secret (Hqn)

Once Upon a Read-a-thon - Mini-Challenge!

Once Upon a Read-a-Thon

Today there is a mini-challenge from YA Bliss to pick our top 3 love triangles...
This is hard... Every time I think of a love triangle, it's from a YA book... Oh well, I guess I'll go with those.

1. Heath and Stark - House of Night series. My problem is I love them both. I know things happen where the triangle is no longer, but the couple books there was one made me laugh and ache for Zoey.
Marked: A House of Night Novel

2. Dmitri and Adrian - Vampire Academy Series. Yup... I love Adrian. I can't help it, there's something about him.
Vampire Academy Signature Edition: A Vampire Academy Novel
(Can you tell I still have books to read in both of these series?)  LOL

3. And, I'm going to have to go with Edward and Jacob from you know where... I can't help it, I was always for Jacob... I have many, many reasons. Though, I honestly wasn't a huge fan of Bella - I'd take Jacob any day. :)
Twilight (The Twilight Saga, Book 1)

Once Upon a Read-a-thon!

Once Upon a Read-a-Thon

This is what I'm doing on vacation... Yay!
I have one book down - Vampire Bites
I'm in the middle of 2 more, and plenty in a pile to go. I hope I get at least 5!

I'll be posting and tweeting updates. Stay tuned, wish me luck! :)

Warrior Reborn blog tour - Interview!

Welcome to the next stop on the
Warrior Reborn blog tour!

Today, I'm so happy to have author, K.H. LeMoyne, here today for an interview.

Thanks so much for joining us today on Reality Bites!

This is the 2nd book in The Guardians of Eden series. Can you tell us a little about the world you have created in this series?
The Guardians are a race originated in the Garden of Eden and bound in a covenant to ensure the evolution of mankind, with each Guardian child releasing the souls for mankind’s spiritual well-being. However, their race is composed of a finite group of people, representing segments of humanity from all over the world. Each adult Guardian in a generation is gifted with a unique power. Compliance with the covenant rewards each Guardian with a mate with whom they share a soul for eternity.
Life was good until two hundred years before the series starts chronicling the Guardians. A plague killed most of the adult Guardians on earth. The children under the age of maturity were sent back to the Sanctum in Eden for their protection. It was children raising children. Not only has much of their history been lost, but now as adults they’ve been unable to find mates within their race, and the curse of the plague still hovers over them.

The Guardians seem like such a fresh idea to me, what was your inspiration?
I’ve often wondered if the human race hasn’t had help at critical times in our development. Or perhaps I am just the eternal optimist and hope that we aren’t alone and super powers really do exist. Out of those musings the Guardians of Eden were born.

How exactly do you pronounce Briet? :) And where did you come up with her name?
Brie (like the cheese) + ette. Actually, her name is Scandinavian, meaning ‘beautiful’. Each of the Guardian siblings, one brother and one sister, hail from different parts of the globe. For the most part, the names of the characters reflect geographically where their families originated from or the primary culture in that area. Some examples of the other character names: Tsu and Quan are from an eastern province of China, Kaax is Maya, Kamau is from Kenya, Xavier and his sister Sagari, are from the Basque region of Spain, and on it goes.

What do you love most about this series?
I love that all the characters share a legacy but differ in their powers and lineage. This allows a wonderful range of options for each of the Guardians and since they’ve been sequestered for the last two hundred years due to plague, there are many scenarios to let them playout their powers and interaction with mankind.

How many books do you have planned for us?
The mystery suspense of the Guardian plague is resolved in eight books, which follow eight of the main characters. However, I have several novellas and side stories for characters who deserved their own happy endings. However, it isn’t my intention to have the series last forever.

Do you have a favorite place where you go to write?
My office. It took me forever to set up a space that works for me and just sitting down with the story or research is usually enough to get me started for the day (if I stay away from email and the internet). That said, when my son was in college I used to have five-hour car trips to pick him up at the end of the summer and for breaks. I would listen to tapes from various writers’ conferences during the trip and carry a hand-held cassette recorder in the car. When something in a workshop or presentation resonated with me, I’d stop the cd and record my thoughts on the cassette: scenes, plot points, and questions to transcribe later. It was wonderful for bursting out lot of ideas. And yes, I was driving, but I only had to turn on the recorder (not hold it), so rest assured, I maintained the ten & two position with my hands on the wheel from most of the trip.

Can you give us 3 random facts about you?
Hmm, I collect tarot card sets (love the artwork), I’m a fan of the Marvel and DC comic book heroes, and I attended kindergarten and first grade in Spain. Sadly, I’m no longer bilingual.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not writing?
I spend time with my family and read. Nothing’s better than curling up with a good book or my Kindle.

What can we look forward to from you in the near future?
I am finishing the second book, Shepherd, from my cyber/futuristic series which is due for August/September delivery. Then I’ll be finishing work on book three of the Guardian series, Tsu’s book: Destiny’s Mark, targeted for year-end delivery. And hopefully, a novella for the Portals of Destiny series: The Dragon Rider’s Princess, will also be out around that timeframe.

Quickies- Favorites:
Cookie - Black & whites
Comfort food - spaghetti
Drink- vodka martini, straight up with an olive (a rare treat)
Music – rock (multi) and Spanish flamenco guitar
Movie – Harry Potter (any of them)
Book / Author:  Hmm, I can’t pick just one. So here’s my beginning list:
Marjorie M. Liu/ Hunter Kiss series, Jim Butcher/Dresden Files, Michelle Sagara/Chronicles of Elantra, LJ DeLeon/Warriors for Light, Harry Connolly/Twenty Palaces series…and of course, Lora Leighs/Breeds and Joey W. Hill/Vampire series

Finally, any advice for aspiring writers out there?
Write because you love it. Then write, keep writing, and don’t stop, because no one is born an author and everyone—everyone has to write through miles to find their voice. Most important, enjoy the journey.

Again, Thanks so much! I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions! :)
Thank you for hosting me, Mandy.
KH LeMoyne was born into a naval family, experiencing total emersion in Spanish kindergarten in Rota, Spain. Her childhood of migrating up and down the eastern US seaboard, with hops from California to Arizona to Virginia, inspired her love of stories and myth. After fifteen years as an Information Systems professional, she now writes full time in romance: fantasy, futuristic and paranormal and straight urban fantasy under another pseudonym. Follow Friday #14

Another Friday :)
I can't believe how fast July is flying by already...

The feature this week:

Lisa @ Read. Breath. Relax

And this week's question:

Q. Let's step away from besties...What is the worst book that you've ever read and actually finished?

Yikes! this is hard. If a book doesn't grab me, I usually don't finish it. And I don't keep them around, so I can't even use a visual to help me. So, sorry... no answer this week. I know, lame, right? Oh well... Thanks for stopping and have a great Friday!

The next time you hear from me will be from the great North of Wisconsin. :) Around here, we call it "going Up North" I will be doing nothing but reading, writing, relaxing, and blogging. :)

Follow Friday #13

It's Friday! Woohoo! And it's July!
More woohoo!! :)
Follow Friday is a meme sponsored by Parajunkee. This week's feature is:

Erika @ Let's talk about books

 And this week's question:

Q. ACK! Your favorite book/movie character (example Hermione Granger played by the Emma chick) just walked into the room! Who is it and what would be your first reaction? You get extra points if you include visual stimulation.

This is tough... Do they have to be both? For book - it would be Qhuinn, and I'd probably be so intimidated, I wouldn't look at him directly and would be silent the whole time, wallowing in my uncoolness... :) What's yours?

Have a great weekend!!
